Senior Client Underwriter P&C

About the Role
We are looking for a proactive, highly motivated and results oriented Senior Client Underwriter. You will be responsible for high quality underwriting, portfolio, and client management – as a "one stop shop" to serve our clients' annual renewal business in P&C Lines of Business in Canada and/or the English Caribbean.
You will engage in frequent dialogue with brokers and clients on strategic, financial and technical topics, building long term relationships. With an entrepreneurial mindset, you will identify and originate new opportunities to support your clients, differentiating Swiss Re and delivering the full value of the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and champion client relations across the full range from expert to senior management levels (incl. C-suite interaction)
- Identify opportunities with existing and new clients to grow the business and develop bespoke reinsurance deals in conjunction with relevant specialists.
- Perform end-to-end underwriting analysis for proportional and non-proportional treaty business, including pricing, contracts review and basic structuring.
- Evaluate and assess risks in accordance with company guidelines and standards, make underwriting decisions within respective authority level.
- Negotiate annual renewal and new business, apply consultative sales techniques to identify clients' needs and deploy services as applicable.
- Build, maintain and further develop a strong internal and external network, including relationships with clients, brokers, and industry associations.
- Gather and internally share market intelligence (trends in buying behaviors and competitors undertakings); attend conferences and market events.
- Anticipate and analyze future industry, economic and legal trends; transfer know-how, coach and train colleagues in areas of own expertise.
- Help to maintain a sustainable portfolio and enforce a portfolio steering culture by contributing to efficiently write profitable business.
About the Team
The P&C Client Markets team is responsible for Swiss Re's Property, Casualty and Special Lines business relationships in Canada and the English Caribbean. We are an experienced and cohesive community focused to deliver best-in-class service for our clients' delight and our personal growth. You will experience a frank and results oriented office environment where collaboration and fun help create strong bonds. You will closely work with a well-experienced cross-functional team of Client Underwriters, Treaty Underwriters, Business Development, Contracts and Claims professionals. Part of the team's role is to ensure that all team members are fully aligned and committed to the defined strategy.
About You
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- 8-10 years of experience in the (re)insurance industry, of which 3 in an underwriting role (preferably treaty underwriting)
- Understanding of the end-to-end reinsurance value chain and relevant market knowledge (e.g. trends, competitors, capital markets context)
- Experience in the casualty line of business would be considered an asset
- Solid quantitative/analytical skills, underwriting judgement, and experience with risk selection/evaluation as well as a flair for wording and costing issues
- Client focused (understand needs and act on them), strong communication skills (comfortable to engage with clients' and brokers' C-suite)
- Advanced consultancy skills (listen, ask right questions and "connect the dots"), coupled with financial acumen and relevant corporate finance knowledge
- Strong negotiation and sales skills, ability to successfully handle conflicts, at ease with leaving the comfort zone and to navigate ambiguity
- Entrepreneurial mindset (sense of urgency, cost consciousness, personal risk taking, adaptable), committed to sustainable performance and continuous improvement.
- Embraces our behaviors of simplification, speed of decision-making and accountability to bring them to life in all that we do
- Excellent organizational/project management skills, ability to manage peak period workloads (seasonality)
- Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate in a team environment
- Creative thinking capability and a problem-solving mindset
- Network within Canadian and/or the Caribbean insurance industry is a plus
- Languages: Fluency in English. French is a plus
